Is making coffee at home worth it?
Financially, yes — significantly. Two café coffees per day at $5.50 each, 250 days a year, adds up to $2,750 annually. A quality home espresso machine costing $800 amortised over 5 years adds $160/year, and beans/pods add roughly $150/year — total home cost around $310/year. That's a saving of over $2,400 per year. Over 5 years: $12,000+. Whether it's worth it depends on how much you value the café experience and the time saved.
What is the best home coffee machine for saving money?
For maximum savings, a bean-to-cup or manual espresso machine with freshly ground beans gives café-quality coffee at around $0.50–$0.80 per cup. Nespresso pods ($0.80–$1.20/pod) are convenient but more expensive than beans. Plunger and AeroPress are the cheapest ($0.30–$0.50/cup) and produce excellent coffee with minimal equipment. Avoid super-premium automatic machines over $2,000 — the payback period becomes very long.
What is the average coffee price in Australia?
As of 2025, the average flat white in Australia costs between $5.00 and $6.50, depending on location. Sydney and Melbourne café prices tend to sit at $5.50–$6.50, while regional areas are often $4.50–$5.50. Specialty coffee shops in major cities can charge $6–$8. Hospitality cost pressures, coffee bean price increases, and the cost of milk have all pushed Australian café coffee prices up significantly since 2022.
