How to Use This Fuel Cost Calculator
This fuel calculator helps estimate how much a trip may cost in petrol or other fuel based on distance, fuel economy, price per litre, and whether the trip is one way or return. It is useful for road trips, household travel budgeting, work travel planning, and cost-sharing with passengers.
Enter the total trip distance, your vehicle’s fuel consumption in litres per 100km, the current fuel price in cents per litre, and the number of passengers if you want a per-person estimate. If the trip is a return journey, switch the return option on so the total distance is doubled automatically.
The calculator then estimates litres required, total fuel cost, cost per 100km, and cost per person. This is often more useful than a vague guess because road trip costs can rise quickly over long distances or with less fuel-efficient vehicles.
Why This Helps
Fuel spend is one of the most immediate transport costs people feel on a trip. A simple estimate makes it easier to compare driving with flying, public transport, or ridesharing, and helps avoid under-budgeting before you leave.
Practical Reminder
This is a base estimate. Real costs can rise due to traffic, detours, heavy loads, air conditioning, towing, or changes in fuel price between stops.
Formula
Fuel required = distance x fuel consumption / 100, and trip cost = litres required x price per litreFrequently Asked Questions
Where do I find my car's fuel consumption?
Many drivers use the owner’s manual, trip computer, or manufacturer specifications. Real-world use may differ from official figures, so recent actual usage is often the most useful input.
Why is my real trip cost higher than the estimate?
Because actual consumption can increase with traffic, steep terrain, headwinds, towing, air conditioning, or a heavily loaded vehicle. Fuel prices can also vary between locations.
Should I use one-way or return distance?
Use whichever matches the trip you want to budget. If you know you are coming back the same way, including the return leg gives a much more realistic total cost.
Is cost per person useful for shared travel?
Yes. Splitting the estimated total gives a simple fairness benchmark for road trips, lifts to events, and shared fuel contribution discussions.
Should I build in a fuel buffer for long trips?
Usually yes. A modest buffer can be sensible for long drives, regional routes, or trips where conditions may be less predictable than the ideal assumptions used in the basic estimate.
