    Standard Tipping Guide

Tipping norms vary by country and service type. In Australia tipping is optional but appreciated; in the US it's generally expected:

  • 10% — poor or inattentive service
  • 15% — average service
  • 18–20% — good service (US standard)
  • 20–25% — great service, memorable experience
  • 25–30% — exceptional service or special occasions
  • When Should You Tip?

Sit-down restaurants: 15–20% in the US; 10–15% in Australia if service was good. Food delivery: 10–20% depending on distance and conditions. Bars and cafes: $1–2 per drink, or 10–15% on the tab. Hotels: $2–5 per night for housekeeping; $1–2 per bag for bellhops. Taxi/rideshare: 10–15% is standard in most markets. Takeout: Optional — 10% is a kind gesture for counter service.

    Quick Mental Maths

To calculate a 20% tip in your head: move the decimal one place left to get 10%, then double it. On a $75 bill: $7.50 × 2 = $15.00 tip.

    For 15%: find 10% and add half of that. On an $80 bill: $8.00 + $4.00 = $12.00.

    Formula

    Tip = Bill × (Tip% / 100) | Total = Bill + Tip | Per Person = Total ÷ People

    Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the US, 18–20% is the standard for sit-down restaurants. 15% is acceptable for average service and 25%+ for exceptional. In Australia, tipping is appreciated but not required — 10% is generous for good service.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is technically correct and slightly lower. Most people tip on the post-tax total for simplicity. The difference on a $100 bill is usually less than $2 — either approach is fine.

How do I split a bill unevenly?

This calculator splits the bill evenly between all people. For uneven splits, calculate the full total including tip first, then divide proportionally based on what each person ordered.

How do I calculate a 20% tip in my head?

    Move the decimal one place left to get 10%, then double it. Example: $65 bill → $6.50 (10%) → $13.00 (20%). For 15%: find 10% and add half — $6.50 + $3.25 = $9.75.

Do I tip on a discounted or coupon price?

Tip on the full original price before any discount or coupon is applied. Your server provided the same level of service regardless of your deal — tipping on the pre-discount total is the considerate standard.

Is this tip calculator free to use?

Yes, completely free. No signup, no download, no account required. Enter your bill and get results instantly.
