Frequently Asked Questions
Is redundancy pay tax-free in Australia?
The 'genuine redundancy' payment component is tax-free up to a limit. For 2025–26, the tax-free amount is $12,585 plus $6,297 for each completed year of service. Amounts above this are taxed at a maximum of 32% (concessional tax rate), not your marginal rate.
Do casual employees get redundancy pay?
Generally no — casual employees are not entitled to redundancy pay under the NES, unless they have been employed on a regular and systematic basis and had reasonable expectation of continuing employment.
What if my employer offers more than NES redundancy?
Your award, enterprise agreement, or employment contract may provide for higher redundancy payments than the NES minimum. You are entitled to whichever is higher.
